2020 Subaru Outback – A New Car That Continues the Legacy
Reworking on something people love is a risky affair. Ask Coco Cola for their experience on the “New Coke” in 1985. The designers at Subaru seem to have been mindful of that while working on the 2020 Outback. The 2010 model that was a complete facelift was an instant hit and made Japanese carmaker a household name in the United States earning huge fandom. The team has approached styling the new product carefully and instead of trying to reinvent the form factor they have preferred to continue with the legacy.
But for the vertically shaped LED fog lights and moving the Outback logo to the rear door sill from the front, the 2020 model hasn’t undergone major design changes. There have been few tweaks in terms of the roof rails but overall the model seems to carry on the same genes as the model it replaces. What they have tried to retain is the practicality of the car in terms of space and ambiance inside which made the previous model popular.
There has been a major change under the hood as the old 3.6-liter horizontally 6-cylinder engine that was available as an option has been replaced with a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. This has been aimed at addressing the criticism about the poor performance of the previous engine especially at higher altitudes.
There have also been major improvements in terms of safety and the new Outback has been built on Subaru Global Platform (SGP) where the sub-frame is more rigid and offers 40% more protection in case of impacts on the front and sides. Addition of EyeSight advanced safety systems also improves the safety feature on the car.
Only time would tell is the 2020 Subaru Outback is able to create the same kind of magic as it did back in 2010 but overall the team seem to have put up a car that is aligned with the aspirations of its fans.
