2022 Ram 1500 TRX – Innovation That Sparks Excitement
2022 Ram 1500 TRX Review
Our pick for Truck of the Year in 2021was the Ram 1500 TRX. It completely shattered our preconceived notions of what was achievable for a street-legal performance vehicle. It is carried over into the 2022 model year with many updates, including a new infotainment system, a new special edition package, and a few additional tweaks here and there. The Ram 1500 TRX competes most directly with the Ford F-150 Raptor and the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, despite the fact that it primarily serves its own market niche.
Let’s see what’s new
The new Ram 1500 TRX Ignition Edition has orange paint, black wheels, and a unique interior with orange stitching and copper carbon-fiber elements. Other exterior highlights include carbon fiber accents. The Uconnect 5 system is the default option. Now featured in the Trailer Tow Group, the Trailer Hitch Light consists of four LED lights that offer lighting from immediately above the trailer hitch. The Ram Air Quality System is included as standard equipment.
What We Believe
When Ram released the 1500 TRX into the world, it struck gold. Although this vehicle isn’t economical in terms of beginning cost or fuel efficiency, its outstanding performance puts it apart from its closest rivals. Although it is a wickedly quick super truck, it also performs admirably when towing and transporting things. The TRX is excellent at rock crawling and high-speed off-roading thanks to a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a 2.64:1 crawl ratio and electronically locking rear differential. Its engine power assures sports car rapid acceleration. As we discovered when driving it as a support vehicle on our 7,700-mile off-road journey with the Rivian R1T, it is also tough.
Perhaps more amazingly, the Ram 1500’s latest model handles well on twisting roads because of its Bilstein shocks, which almost eliminate body roll and brake dive. It can confront almost any road blemish or bump head-on while yet retaining body control. Another strong element is transmission adjustment. Ram has paddle shifters for the 1500 TRX, but we were able to let the truck shift on its own since the eight-speed automatic was set up so effectively.
The Ram 1500 TRX’s styling continues to be one of its biggest flaws; in our opinion, this obscenely powerful vehicle resembles the weaker Rebel model too much. Another negative is the poor fuel efficiency and the $72,000 starting price, which rises with extras. The TRX is a remarkable vehicle all around, with great performance and a tonne of amenities. There is no better way to say goodbye to the era of the internal combustion.
2022 Ram 1500 TRX Performance
There is only one engine option available for the 2022 Ram 1500 TRX. What a powerful engine. An eight-speed automatic transmission connects the 6.2-liter supercharged V-8’s 702 horsepower and 605 lb-ft of torque to a full-time four-wheel-drive system. The TRX ran from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, and it ran the standing quarter mile in 12.7 seconds at 106.3 mph. It outperforms sports vehicles like the Ford Mustang Bullitt, Mercedes-AMG GT 53, and Subaru WRX STI S209 and is the fastest pickup truck we’ve ever tested.
The fuel efficiency may be better. The 1500 TRX is the least efficient truck among its rivals, receiving 10/14 mpg city/highway according to the EPA. It can tow 8,100 pounds and carry 1,310 pounds in the bed. During testing, it quickly dispatched our 5,200-pound trailer. With the trailer hitch installed, 0-60 mph was reached in 7.5 seconds.
Ram 1500 TRX Techs
The Ram 1500 TRX now comes standard with Stellantis’ new Uconnect 5 system, which has a 12.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. The truck also incorporates automated cross-path detection, a color head-up display, and an automatic checklist for hooking up the trailer. As part of a package, a proximity key and remote start are offered.
Towing Capacity
The Ram 1500 TRX has plenty of legroom, especially in the back. The space available for stretching out is 40.9 inches for those in the front row and a whopping 45.2 inches for those in the second row. The truck has a 5-foot 7-inch bed and is only available with a crew cab configuration. It can tow 8,100 pounds and carry 1,310 pounds in the bed.
Advised Trimming
The Ram 1500 TRX is only offered in one trim, although there are two equipment groups. The first is TRX Level 1, which upgrades the inside to include body-color door handles, power lumbar-adjustable seats, wrapped door handles and assist handles, ambient lighting, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals, and rear under-seat storage. More is done by the TRX Level 2 Equipment Group. In addition to more driving assistance technologies, keyless entry and ignition, trailing technology, and wireless charging, it has all the characteristics of the first group.
Frequently asked question
Does Ram TRX require premium gas?
I ask you to please turn away now if you’re afraid of expensive trips to the petrol station. The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX only achieves a pitiful 10 mpg in city driving, 14 mpg on the interstate, and 12 mpg combined, according to the EPA. Be ready to set aside money for premium fuel, which the TRX demands as well.
Does the Ram TRX have a Hellcat engine?
The Ram 1500 TRX Hellcat engine will be replaced in 2021. The days of an iron block supercharged 6.2-liter V8 are numbered, according to Tim Kuniskis, CEO of Dodge. This suggests that the Ram 1500 TRX’s Hellcat engine might eventually fail.
What is special about Ram TRX?
The quickest and most powerful off-road vehicle available is the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX. The TRX’s 702-horsepower engine was taken from the Dodge Hellcat family of high-performance vehicles but was modified for use in heavy-duty, high-speed racing.
