2022 Rivian R1S-Performance That is Wonderfully Crafted
2022 Rivian R1S Review
You’re all set to go on an electric adventure, but which car body style is ideal for you? An enclosed SUV with seven seats or a pickup truck with a gear tunnel and five seat belts? You almost don’t need to read anything we have to say after taking a quick static tour of the brand-new 2022 Rivian R1S and its pickup-based brother, the Truck of the Year-winning R1T. The two cars operate in a similar manner. But be patient with us as we attempt to defend the silly, enjoyable charade that was sampling Rivian’s R1
Difference Between Rivian R1S and Rivian R1T
Physically
A third-row seat and a carpeted cargo space are more aesthetically pleasing than a gear tunnel and pickup box: The 2022 Rivian R1S has a shorter overall length of 200.8 inches, a shorter wheelbase of 121.1 inches, and a curb weight of 7,000 pounds for both rounds with the 135-kWh battery pack. Each of the two trucks has a payload capability of around 1,500 pounds due to their combined gross vehicle weight rating of 8,532 pounds.
Off the Beaten Track
Again, the shorter wheelbase and rear overhang increase the break-over angle and departure angle (from 26.4 to 29.6 degrees) (from 30.0 to 34.3 degrees). The maximum ground clearance is almost the same (35.6), as is the approach angle, and the wading depth is slightly over 3.0 feet (floatation limits the safe fording depth for both vehicles, not water intrusion).
Ranking of R1S’s SUV
Outside, Rivian’s SUV roughly resembles the Tesla Model X and Lincoln Aviator in terms of size. The passenger and cargo volume within the front, middle, and back rows, respectively, is 59.7, 52.1, and 36.1 cubic feet, and is remarkably similar to that of a Subaru Ascent. In comparison to the Tesla Model X, a rectangular form factor greatly increases third-row headroom; yet, a flat bottom cushion significantly reduces thigh support for taller passengers in the rear. While electronic releases in the cargo compartment fold the backrests flat for hauling luggage, a button on top of the second-row seatbacks tilts the backrest and enables the seat to move for third-row access. The middle 20% may independently fold to accommodate skis or fishing poles. Levers located at the outboard shoulder level are used to manually fold the third-row seats. The cargo area’s aluminum rails may hold sliding tie-downs or other accessories. A first aid kit and the airline for the basic compressor are stored on a tray in the underfloor bin, and there is space for an auxiliary roller shade.
Latest Sand Mode
About once a month, Rivian releases new over-the-air upgrades. A recent cool one is the off-road Sand mode, which was motivated by experience gained competing in the Rebelle Rally. At launch, very little wheelspin is permitted, and after the vehicle has reached a speed of 6 mph, the suspension is adjusted to its softest setting, and the traction control slip objectives are changed. Regenerative braking is decreased to a level below what is permitted on surfaced roads in order to prevent digging when slowing. These steps are intended to mitigate the negative consequences of more weight and narrower tires in comparison to competitors who operate in the desert, such as the Ram TRX and Ford F-150 Raptor.
Cost of 2022 Rivian R1S
The 135-kWh battery pack is included in the base price of the quad-motor 2022 Rivian R1S Launch Edition cars, which start at $95,575. The 105-kWh dual-motor variant is anticipated to cost $73,550 when it becomes available in 2024; the 135-kWh pack and the quad-motor alternatives should add $6,000 apiece.
The R1S is shorter but is it sweeter than the R1T
If you were forced to choose between the Honda Pilot SUV and the Ridgeline truck or the Hyundai Santa Fe SUV and the Santa Cruz truck, we would recommend purchasing the SUV models and renting a truck from Home Depot whenever you truly needed a pickup instead of making that choice. But the Rivian R1T truck has so many more advantages than other midsize pickups that we’re inclined to recommend it as a pickup rather than a truck in this scenario, much like we do with the Ford Maverick and Bronco Sport siblings.
