2022 Mercedes GLC: Everything we know in April 2022

The Mercedes GLC mid-size SUV that replaced the GLK in June 2015 is waiting for its full-model change. The second-generation 2022 Mercedes GLC should premiere by June, and in this story, we take a look at what we know about the crossover-SUV sibling of the latest C-Class.

2022 Mercedes GLC design & features

On the design front, while today’s GLC is drastically different from the GLK, the next-gen GLC (codename: Mercedes X254) is more of an evolutionary departure. That said, all the body panels are new, and it appears to have a longer wheelbase and lower stance for clear differentiation from the Mercedes GLB. We’ve talked more about dimensions in more detail in the next section. TopElectricSUV.com reader Fran Rosa Moreno shared spy pictures showing a 2022 Mercedes GLC with sleek production headlights that are more angular. They slant upwards like on the Mercedes EQS but aren’t as narrow at the outer ends.

Driver Assistance Updates

Mercedes says the updated GLC will also get overhauled versions of some of its safety and driver-assistance systems. Active Distance Assist has updated its stationary vehicle response maneuvering speed from a max of 37 mph now up to 60 mph. Active Steering Assist will get improved performance on bendy “country roads,” improved freeway lane-centering, and more lane detection features thanks to new 360-degree camera tech featured on the next-gen GLC. Mercedes also describes a “Digital Light” with “projection functions” and customizable “Coming/Leaving Home” animations that play out on the ground in front of the car, using the vehicle’s headlights. Traffic Sign Assist will now recognize signage on overhead structures and in construction zones, including conditional signage like “slippery when wet,” with new warnings to alert the driver in various scenarios, including when they are about to run a stop sign or red light. Mercedes also says its parking systems will get improved surround sensors and better low speed maneuverability.

Interior Changes

Mercedes has already confirmed some random interior details for the new GLC, too. It will get an all-new three-spoke steering wheel with redesigned control panels for navigation, phone, entertainment, cruise control and proximity control buttons. The main dashboard will get a 11.9-inch central LCD display, and a 12.3-inch monitor sits behind the steering wheel for the driver. The third-gen GLC will get the updated MBUX user experience infotainment system, with updated “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant commands, and new augmented reality features that project addresses and details onto the infotainment screen’s exterior surround-view live video feed. A special off-road menu with an optional “transparent hood” function that utilizes the 360-degree camera tech to show the ground beneath the front of the vehicle on the infotainment screen for better maneuverability.

Air-Balance

A slew of improvements that take care of occupants’ well-being can also be expected in the 2022 GLC. This aspect would include the availability of features like Air-Balance Package and Energizing Coach. Air-Balance Package provides the preferred fragrance in the cabin for a refreshed feeling. Energizing Coach suggests a suitable fitness or wellness program based on the vehicle and trip data and the information about sleep quality and stress level from a paired wearable device like a smartwatch. The plug-in hybrid variants may benefit from an additional “Power Nap” program, with falling asleep, sleeping, and waking phases that can help the driver recharge himself/herself when making a stop for service or battery recharge.

Built-in Apple Music

The MBUX infotainment system of the 2022 GLC will have Apple Music online music streaming service built into it. With an Apple Music subscription, customers can access more than 75 million songs directly from the infotainment system using its own data connection. Simple voice command with the “Hey Mercedes” prompt would allow the driver to conveniently request songs, playlists, albums, or radio stations from Apple Music. The built-in Apple Music integration is first available in the C-Class, S-Class, and EQS models, which leads us to believe that the new GLC would acquire it. Available music streaming services in the 2022 GLC’s MBUX infotainment system should include Spotify, Amazon Music, and TIDAL.

2022 Mercedes GLC dimensions

The GLC hasn’t changed drastically from the previous model on the dimensions front, at least not on the outside. Peter Kolb, head of testing of the GLC, told the media during a recent event that the 2022 Mercedes GLC is 4,718 mm (185.7 in.) long, 60 mm longer (2.3 in.) than its predecessor. Customers can expect noticeable improvements on the inside. Mercedes-Benz has addressed a big shortcoming of the GLC, the space for rear-seat passengers and luggage. Increasing the wheelbase by 15 mm (0.6 in.) was the first step. According to an Autocar report, the cargo volume behind the rear seats is a class-leading 600 liters (21 cu. ft.), and that marks an improvement of 50 liters (1.8 cu. ft.).

2022 Mercedes GLC release date

The next-gen GLC will celebrate its world premiere in June 2022, and according to the report from JESMB, will hit the first markets in September 2022. Mercedes-Benz Group may schedule deliveries of the next-gen Mercedes GLC in the U.S. in the Sept-Nov 2022 period. Consider that the auto industry is reeling from a shortage of semiconductors, which has hampered production schedules and new product launches. The war in Ukraine has also affected automakers, as their suppliers (making wire harnesses and interior parts) have had to pause production. Hence, there is an air of unpredictability around the debuts or production launches of cars in 2022.
