2023 BMW 7 Series First Look Revealed

The all-electric i7 sedan, the brand’s new flagship EV, is the star of the all-new 7th-generation BMW 7 Series lineup. While the seven is bound to attract a lot of attention, it’ll be joined by an updated family of combustion-powered 7 Series models, which will come with a revamped I-6 and an all-new optional V-8 engine architecture tailored to match the EV’s remarkable 536 horsepower. It made a bold commitment to both internal combustion engines (ICE) and electric vehicles (EVs) for years to come; BMW has created the new seven range to offer near-identical performance and luxury packages in three distinct powertrain offerings.

The Three Versions

All three powertrains can be installed within a single assembly line at BMW’s Dingolfing factory, according to BMW. The new BMW 7 Series chassis was intended from the start to be flexible for a variety of three distinct drive types, including the two new mild-hybrid models introduced today, a future plug-in hybrid, and the i7 fully electric. The new split headlight signature detail will be limited to the seven lines, including the recently redesigned X7 SUV, at least for the time being, to distinguish the brand’s top luxury offerings. Three new models will be introduced alongside the new 7 Series, two of which will be combustion-powered. The 2023 BMW 760i xDrive all-wheel-drive vehicle, which includes an all-new V-8 engine, is the more intriguing of the two. The 4.4-liter turbocharged V-8 comes with an all-new cross-bank exhaust manifold, increased turbocharger performance, and a 48-volt mild-hybrid starter-generator system paired to a new eight-speed sport transmission with adaptive recuperation (regenerative braking). The new V-8 produces 536 horsepower (the same as the new i7) and 553 lb-ft of peak torque. It takes 4.2 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph. The 2023 BMW 740i S-Drive joins the new 760i, which gets an improved Miller-cycle 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 engine with modified combustion chambers and intake ports, variable camshaft timing, and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with the new sport transmission. The upgraded I-6 mild-hybrid arrangement produces 375 horsepower (40 more than the previous model) and 383 pound-feet of peak torque, with an acceleration boost feature allowing you to get up to 398 pound-feet for a brief period of time. BMW boasts that it can go from 0 to 60 mph in about 5 seconds. In a roundtable meeting with media last week, BMW announced that the V-12 would not be offered again. The onboard 48-volt technology boosts the car’s power output by 147 lb-ft of torque and 12 horsepower, using a 48-volt battery under the trunk that is refilled by the regenerative braking system. It can also supply power to the car’s 12-volt electrical system. The all-electric i7 variant has a heated 101.7-usable-kWh battery pack connected to two electric motor drive units, one on each axle, with a combined output of 536 horsepower and 549 pound-feet of torque—tuned to roughly equal the 760i ICE model.

The Platform

The redesigned 7 has a 1.9-inch front track and a 0.16-inch rear track, as well as larger wheels and wider tires for enhanced body stiffness and handling capability. It has a reworked double-wishbone front suspension and a five-link rear suspension, as well as a new elastic steering gear mounting for “improved acoustic qualities” and new rear axle hydro mounts for improved ride comfort. Standard on all BMW 7 Series models is a two-axle adaptive air suspension with auto self-leveling and electronically controlled dampers, as well as localized air supply balancing at each wheel to help maintain “optimum ride height” even at high speeds. In Sport mode, the car’s ride height reduces by 0.4 inches, and it will drop that amount at any speed above 87 mph. The suspension can also be increased by 0.8 inches if desired. Integral Active Steering, BMW’s all-wheel-drive system, is available on the 740i but standard on the 760i xDrive, reducing the car’s turning radius by 2.5 feet.

Inside Insights

There’s a massive new curved display with BMW’s latest generation of iDrive infotainment from the center console to behind the steering wheel. Gesture control is still available, and the redesigned interior layout is designed with minimal touchpoints for gestures (hand-waving, spinning, etc.) and voice control. The crystal trim strip becomes a touch-sensitive control panel with climate control, hazard lights, glove box opening, and the door close button, thanks to a new BMW Interaction Bar. The 760i xDrive comes standard with Merino leather, while the six-cylinder BMW 740i comes with a new Veganza leather-like material that comes in four colors. A roof-mounted camera not only allows the driver to see into the back seats but also allows owners to check in on the vehicle remotely via the vehicle’s linked phone app. If you choose, BMW claims it can even capture the selfies of the passengers.
