The 2022 Lucid Air is surely making a strong first impression. Lucid Motors, a brand-new Lucid electric car company based in the United States, has unveiled its first premium 2022 new sedan. It not only has all of the usual luxury amenities of a luxury sedan, but it also has a greater range than any other EV on the market and has the power of two big V8 engines tucked under the hood. The Air Dream Range Edition was put to the test. Its all-wheel drive and 933 horsepower allowed it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in an astonishing 2.8 seconds. These are wonderful for efficiency, allowing the Lucid to drive more than 500 miles on a single charge, but they lack the grip required for dynamic performance, especially given the car’s significant weight. Grippier summer tyres, which are a no-cost option for this model, might enhance the Lucid’s braking and handling, which, at least at our test track, fell short of class norms. Comfortable interior
2022 Lucid Air interior is pleasant, but we expect more from a premium Lucid Air electric vehicle in this price range. The seats, for example, are highly adjustable and pleasant on long rides, although general support is limited. The ride is typically pleasant, although on uneven routes it might feel a little crowded. The cabin of the Air is enormous, with more passenger room than almost any other electric vehicle on the road. Both rows have lots of headroom and elbow room, with the back legroom being especially large. Although vehicles with larger power packs have slightly higher back floors, you can really stretch out. The wide-opening doors make it simple to get in and out. The driving posture may not be optimal for taller drivers. Because the seat doesn’t appear to go all the way down, tall drivers will be able to see straight past the tint line at the top of the glass. It’s a mixed bag when it comes to visibility. Lucid doesn’t support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto but says they’re coming. We had trouble getting voice commands to work throughout testing. The navigation system lags and the voice direction can’t be muted. As with the interior room, Lucid’s engineers spent a lot of time thinking about space usage. The Air has a 16.2-cubic-foot rear trunk and a 9.9-cubic-foot front trunk. The Model S and Taycan trunks are smaller. The Air’s trunk is large despite not being a hatchback like the Model S or Mercedes-Benz EQS. The trunk isn’t tall, but it’s deep with a wide aperture. Low load-in height and no liftover are further pluses. Large door pockets and a central console boost interior storage. The power-retractable bottom centre screen hides a storage bin.
Range and planning
Class-leading all-electric range is Lucid’s saving grace. Dream Range Edition was tested. EPA estimates 520 miles of range with 19-inch wheels; 481 miles with 21-inch wheels. Wheel size affects trims. The Lucid Air was the first Luxury EV sedan to exceed the 500-mile mark in our real-world EV range test, reaching 505 miles. That’s a remarkable effort, flaws notwithstanding. 28.3 kWh per 100 kilometres driven. That’s more than its 27 kWh/100 miles EPA rating, but still quite efficient and better than the Model S Plaid and Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+.
