2023 Cadillac Lyriq Comes with An Electrified, Futuristic Brand
Cadillac’s edge-of-the-line models, such as the renowned Escalade SUV and a slew of V-series super sedans, helped define the brand as it prepares to be fully electrified in 2023, as evidenced by the 2023 Cadillac Lyriqelectric SUV under consideration here. When Cadillac’s XT4, XT5, CT6, XLR, and XTS models were discontinued, they soon faded from memory. They function as uncompetitive stand-ins while an EV takes their position in our transportation infrastructure.Where would Cadillac be today if it hadn’t invested in resurrecting BMW’s Ultimate Driving Machine from the 1990s? What if Cadillac leveraged the Escalade’s name to promote a well-assembled supporting cast of smaller, more affordable SUVs instead of building exciting sports sedans that high-end shoppers had already started to avoid? For us, the answer is simple: The Lyriq Electric Vehicle may be the perfect blend of Cadillac’s real and alternate timelines.
You should know it, it’s a Suv
The Lyriq is the brand’s first mainstream product with halo-level engineering in generations. Cadillac’s first EV demonstrates a desire to grow from the middle out. Lyriq is a hot midsize luxury SUV. The Lyriq will sell like the XT5 or XT6, but you’ll remember it.
Lyriq is similar. This is Cadillac’s first production model featuring corner-mounted vertical headlamp strips. Hood “eyes” are turn signals. All external illumination, including the gloss-black “grille” pinstriping, can be changed and synchronized.
The Lyriq uses GM’s Ultium electric car design. (Ultium will support electrified Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC.) We tested rear-wheel-drive, rear-motor models in Park City, Utah. The Lyriq has a floor-mounted battery and front and rear electric drive motors. The GMC Hummer EV’s rear motor was ready for Lyriq. Cadillac’s new front-drive motor requires more time to develop, so it was launched with the Lyriq model.
Compared to Tesla, Lucid, or luxury SUVs like the BMW X5 or Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, Lyriq’s features are unimpressive. Lyriq’s rear motor produces 340 hp and 325 lb-ft. 12 lithium-ion modules and 102 kWh deliver 312 miles of range. GM’s front and rear multilink suspension (five links per corner) are astonishing. Lyriq uses “Passive-Plus” dampers and coil springs.
The Norm of Luxuriousness
Despite its modest specs, the Cadillac is a pleasure to drive. An optimum ride/handling blend has been achieved by GM’s world-class chassis engineers, which provides soft comfort, sharp noise isolation, and taut control of the vehicle’s body. Large and heavy, this vehicle measures nearly 200 inches in length and 86.9 inches in width, including the side mirrors. Nevertheless, it feels light due to its vice-free design and nearly 50-50 front-to-back weight distribution. Despite its lengthy wheelbase and slightly moderate steering ratio, the Lyriq maintains a flat turning radius and is unfazed by bumps in the center of bends.
However, the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq’s acceleration is adequate, but nothing special. It takes around 6.0 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph. We also noticed a softening of pedal inputs, which implies that the engine hesitates before ramping up its power delivery, no matter how urgently you pounce on the accelerator. The delay prevents the heads of passengers from whipping into the headrests, akin to asking for a downshift in an internal combustion car. Accompanied by safe and comfortable handling, smooth ride, and an absolutely silent interior—thanks to classic sound-deadening and active noise cancellation—dynamics are honed. Yes, a mainstream luxury SUV would fit the bill.
What’s next? Dual-motor Lyriq will deliver roughly 500 horsepower later this year, and a Cadillac engineer hinted that the brand’s V performance badge will remain after the switch to electrics.
The Benchmark for the Rest of the World?
Cadillac interiors haven’t been “World Standard” for at least 50 years. If the latest Escalade turned the tide, the Lyriq lifts it much more, being the rare modern Cadillac, whose interior meets or exceeds its price. It was $62,990.
GM approved new switches, buttons, and the like for Cadillac that isn’t shared with Chevrolet, GMC, or Buick. The parts seem and feel more costly than in the XT4, XT5, or XT6. Precise fittings and thoughtful touches, such as the enormous and delicately sculpted metal speaker grilles on the doors, put the Lyriq in competition with Audi and Mercedes.
As expected, the cabin is enormous. The Lyriq’s 121.8-inch wheelbase is close to a Mercedes-Benz S-Class’, and the rear seat is limousine-sized. As in the Escalade, a 33-inch touchscreen stretches from the left windshield pillar to the dash. On-screen icons are usually “buttons” Shortcuts to audio, navigation, and phone menus are at the bottom of the screen. Swiping left or right in the screen’s center brings up a deeper roster of buttons for more menus and options.
Steering wheel buttons, climate control tabs below the display, and the center tunnel’s knurled control wheel and volume scroll knob are the only physical controls. Touch- and physical-input controls blend wow factor and usability. Even the metal paddles that open the doors from the inside are unique and enjoyable. The flush buttons you push to enter the Lyriq are less so, since they only pop the doors open, necessitating a pull of a little handhold on the front doors or catching the trailing edge of the rear door. No complaints about liftgate release: As with the Escalade, pressing the Cadillac crest opens the tailgate.
