Honda Partners With Sony: An Effort To Develop Electric Vehicles
Wait, what? An electric car developed by Sony! Yes, Sony is all set to step in the EV game, and Honda seems to be setting the grounds for it. Honda Partners With Sony and would build the electric car designed by Sony in 2025. That’s a surmising announcement in the industry by the tech giant. It even would be a huge leap for Sony too. It may come as a surprise to many, but Sony has clearly been sending hints of its intention to build Electric Cars. That latest hint was showcasing the concept versions of the Vision-S 01 sedan and Vision-S 02 SUV this past year’s Consumer Electronics Show. These concepts utilized battery-electric powertrains and were laden with high-end consumer tech. To no surprise, it is the valuable contributions that this tech giant can provide to the future of Electric cars. “In the joint venture, we would like to lead the mobility evolution by combining our technology and experience with Honda’s long experience in mobility development and vehicle body manufacturing technologies,” Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said. But how’s Sony going to do that with no car manufacturing or building experience? Even they have made it clear recently that they have no plan to produce any car. It is when Honda comes in. As Sony won’t be manufacturing or building any of the cars, for now, the joint announcement makes sense. As a part of their joint venture, Honda will build cars for the tech giant. It means these two companies plan for joint development and sales of high value-added battery electric vehicles (EVs). They will commercialize these EVs to provide mobility services. Through this joint venture, Sony surely aims to leverage Honda’s experiences building cars, sales know-how (and, presumably, its sales networks), supply chains, etc. Sony would bring sensing, telecommunication development and application of imaging, network, and entertainment technologies to the table. That would be a unique combination of the two Japanese giants bringing in their niche expertise to provide our car of the future with the touch of both. “In the future, we would like to expand our business with an open mindset,” Mibe said, adding Honda will continue to develop its electric vehicle strategy separate from the joint venture. This co-developed vehicle would be done by a new company that may now own manufacturing facilities but would plan, design, develop, and sell the EVs. They have not announced the name of the company yet. We will have to wait until their deal solidifies. The financial details of the tie-up are also not unrevealed. For the initial new vehicles that are lined up to be launched by 2025, Honda would build electric vehicles Honda would utilize its existing manufacturing facilities. With this, Sony is also expected to craft a new mobility service platform for the cars, except to be package bundled with driver assistance technology. This announcement sure indicated this giant electronic make seeking a key position in the next-generation automobiles.
