2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing – Get Yourself Ready to Take Off!

To say the least, I had high expectations when I initially stepped inside the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. After all, aside from the nomenclature, it’s the fourth generation of the CTS-V, a car that, like many other automotive writers and driving aficionados, has wormed its way into my heart. The first-generation Cadillac redefined what a Cadillac could be; the second-generation re-set the bar by introducing edgier styling and a much-loved station wagon body style; and the third-generation omitted the manual transmission but increased performance while also introducing a handsome new face. Better yet, the CT5-V Blackwing Among today’s sports sedans is our current favorite combines many of the best features of its predecessors — a six-speedCT5 manual gearbox, and a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 based on the Corvette — with the latest electronic features developed by General Motors, ensuring that it is ready for sale in the United States in 2022.

The CT5-V Blackwing’s performance is nearly incomparable

Until recently, a horsepower rating of 668 was reserved for the most powerful sports automobiles. For the record, the Lamborghini Huracan STO has 630 CT5-V Blackwing horsepower while the Ford GT has 660 horsepower. In comparison to the likes of the M5 or M8 Gran Coupe from BMW, the E63 or GT63 S from Mercedes-AMG, and the RS 6 Avant or RS 7, the non-Blackwing V8 in the CT5-V Blackwing produces more power. There is just one other car that comes close to that, and it’s the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, which costs more than twice as much as the Caddy. While all of their competitors have equipped their vehicles with super-smart automatic transmissions and power-maximizing all-wheel-drive systems, GM’s technical geniuses determined that rear-wheel-drive and a good old-fashioned stick shift could provide the same level of performance.

Cadillac’s excellent everyday driver with plenty of room and comfort

Cadillac sought to position the CT5-V Blackwing as a BMW M3 / Mercedes-AMG C63 competition rather than one aimed at the M5 and E63 when it first debuted. It almost made sense from a price and branding standpoint — for a luxury brand, it’s better to say “we offer more power and performance for the money than our competitors” rather than “we’re equal on performance, but hey, we’re cheaper” — but any such illusions quickly dissipate under the weight of its mighty engine, as well as the ample space of its cabin. The CT5 infotainment system isn’t the nicest screen in a car today, but it’s clearly functional, with two physical knobs for volume and menu selection and lots of physical buttons for critical functionality like climate control. It’s a significant upgrade over the previous CTS, which relied on dreadful touch-sensitive strips of plastic that was difficult to control even when sitting motionless, let alone at high speeds.

The CT5-V Blackwing is well worth the sacrifices.

The CT5-V Blackwing would be followed by a lengthy line of significantly enhanced Detroit-made V8-powered sports cars in an alternate universe where carbon dioxide and pollution suddenly disappeared. This is unfortunately not the reality of our day. Every new Cadillac following these will be a CT5 electric vehicle because Cadillac is the spearhead of GM’s electrification effort. There’s a good chance the Wreath & Crest CT5-V Blackwing will be the last V8-powered sedan of any kind, much alone one with a manual transmission with supercar-rivaling power. Of course, further V-Series creatures will emerge through Caddy’s doors; in a decade, we’ll be looking at things like a 1,000-horsepower all-wheel-drive EV super-sedan based on the electric C9 Corvette and sporting a silly moniker like “Speedtastiq.” However, the engagement, the visceral excitement, and the rush that comes with a rear-wheel-drive, stick-shift, V8-powered sports car that also serves as family transportation will be gone.

Numbers that are dynamic are dynamic

On the skidpad, we had some problems getting things straight, but the 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing still put up some impressive results in the lateral-g and figure-eight categories, thanks in part to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Its average acceleration of 1.04 g is on par with the greatest sedans we’ve evaluated in recent years, and it’s the same as the 2022 BMW M5 CS The CT5-V Blackwing clocked a 23.4-second lap at 0.89 g (average) on our MotorTrend figure eight, while the M5 clocked 23.2 seconds at 0.92 g. The Cadillac didn’t quite out-German the M5 dynamic performance, but for a front-engine, a rear-drive sedan with a manual gearbox (the M5 has all-wheel drive with an eight-speed automatic), it’s right up there. That’s quite a feat for a car that is essentially in its first and final generation. Yes, it’s a CTS-V progression, but the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing for 2022 is its own car, a Blackwing that can truly fly.
