2022 Chevrolet Equinox RS – Runner of a Miniature Marathon

At least some performance has always been included in the Rallye Sport (RS) trim, which was employed on Chevrolets throughout the company’s history. The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox RS really shows how frustrating the RS brand can be when used on a vehicle like this. With a sharper-looking exterior and selectable all-wheel drive, you do get the weak 1.5-liter turbo I-4 engine and a less sporty 6-speed automatic transmission. However, despite the fact that the vehicle is well-handled from the factory, the engine and transmission bring back memories of turbo lag and slow shifts that are out of place in today’s automobile culture.

Positive

Despite its weak engine and sluggish six-speed, the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox RS is a competent SUV. It’s spacious, pleasant, and well-equipped. Outside, there are LED lights and a power liftgate. Chevrolet RS has Dark Android 19-inch aluminum wheels. Black roof rails, window surrounds, “Bow Ties,” and badging are also included. Our test vehicle’s Cherry Red color made the Equinox appear nice. The Equinox’s interior has RS accents including a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a red “RS” gearshift, and red stitching.

Our 2022 Chevrolet Equinox RS test vehicle had the optional RS Leather package with a Bose premium seven-speaker system and Jet Black RS leather seats (with red stitching) and the optional Infotainment package with a heated steering wheel, USB data ports in the centre console, and bin, and a 120-volt outlet. It had an 8.0-inch HD touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Advanced Safety includes HD Surround Vision, heated mirrors, and adaptive cruise control. Everything in those packages is a must-have, especially the surround vision, which simplifies parking. You get front and back cameras and a top-down view to help you park safely.

The adaptive cruise control mostly worked. Sometimes it followed other vehicles closely, even when set to the maximum distance. When set to its closest distance, it wasn’t aggressive enough. It behaved best with box trucks, big rigs, and medium SUVs; it tailgated worse with anything smaller than a midsize sedan.

It’s all about the math

Even with its long 4.58:1 first gear, the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox RS took a long time to get going from a stop. Once out of first gear the shifting improved, but our best 0-60mph time was only 8.9 seconds. If you grew up loving the sensation of turbo lag, you’ll be perfectly at home here.

It also gets 25/30/27mpg city/highway/combined in the Equinox RS’ gas mileage. That’s a little less impressive than the 2022 Honda CR-V AWD and 2022 Toyota RAV4 AWD models. Both the CR-V and RAV4 come standard with a 1.5-liter turbocharged I-4 engines, but the CR-V gets 27/32/29 mpg while the RAV4 gets 25-27/33-34/28-30 mpg depending on trim. The Chevy’s six-speed automatic transmission isn’t up to snuff with its engine, whereas the Honda’s CVT and the RAV4’s extra two gears are both better suited to the Chevy (it comes with an eight-speed automatic). Aside from that, both competitors have faster 0-60mph times: the RAV4 clocks in at 8.0 seconds, while the CR-V does so in 7.8 seconds.

A Manner of Handling That Is Acceptable

When you consider that the Chevrolet Equinox is, on the whole, a reasonably enjoyable vehicle to drive, the engine and transmission issues of the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox RS become even more irritating. The damping of its suspension is a little on the harsh side, which can be problematic when making sharp bends into steep entryways, which is a common challenge in Southern California. Aside from that, it’s a lot of fun to show some anger while driving on roads that are twisty and windy.

When you’re behind the wheel of an Equinox at night, you’ll feel confident not just in the vehicle’s ability to handle, but also in the field of view it affords you thanks to its LED lights, which allow ample forward and side visibility for navigating tight curves. Additionally, its automatic high beams function well, and they are able to differentiate between the bright driveway and home lights on the one hand, and car headlights on the other. If you let the engine speed drop below 2,500 revolutions per minute (rpm), the 1.5 turbo lags, and the transmission doesn’t downshift aggressively enough to get the four-cylinder out of its dead zone. It’s all fun and games until you need to come to a stop or pull out of an aggressively tight corner.

Reduced Capacity for Reasonable Storage

However, you can disregard the internal combustion engine and the transmission. Even more frustrating is Equinox’s small amount of space for cargo. When all seats are in their upright positions, there are just 29.9 cubic feet of cargo space available, which is not too much. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that in order to transport an unfurled 20-by-24-by-24-inch box, we needed to lower the rear seats in order to obtain an additional 34 cubic feet of space (bringing the total to 69.9 cubic feet). However, the primary all-wheel-drive competitors of the Chevrolet Equinox have greater cargo space with their seats folded down. The 2022 Honda CR-V has 33.2 cubic feet of space, while the 2022 Toyota RAV4 has 37.5 cubic feet of space.
