2022 Mazda MX-30 – What’s New in the Mazda MX-30

The MX-30 SUV is Mazda’s first attempt at developing a fully Mazda electric vehicle. Despite its attractive look and uncomplicated interior, it is unable to provide a suitable driving MX-30 range. The edgy external design has a roofline reminiscent of a coupe and rear doors that swing in the rear, much like those featured on the BMW i3 electric vehicle. The electric Mazda SUV is equipped with a battery pack that has a capacity of 30.0 kWh and can provide a driving range of up to 100 miles; a 143-hp Mazda electric motor drives the front wheels, and the acceleration isn’t nearly as peppy as it is in competing EVs such as the Chevrolet Bolt, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, or the Tesla Model 3, all of which offer more than twice the driving range of the Mazda. Initially, the MX-30 will only be available for purchase in the state of California, but eventually, this will expand to include additional states.
Getting to Your Destination
Using Nexteer’s L2 charger, the MX-30 electric showed 36 miles of range after an hour and twenty minutes”. There were no “destination out of range” warnings or suggested routes through charging stations when I entered my home address into the vehicle’s navigation system. Since the POI menu didn’t have a current list of chargers (Sirius XM could have provided one, but the press car’s membership had expired), I used my Waze smartphone to find the closest DC Fast-Charger to my destination, which was 33 miles south of my starting point at the Flint airport. With barely 3 miles of cushion, I tucked into draught a 65-mph truck to guarantee that I would arrive with enough energy to find another charger if needed.
Is the Mazda MX-30 a true electric vehicle?

 
In 2010, that would have been a fantastic EV. It’s tough to justify the two-digit real-world range in 2022, especially since there’s no obvious nav programming to aid route planning or eco-coaching to maximize the limited range. Then there’s the claustrophobic packing, the massive hood with no frunk (there’s SO much air underneath), the sluggish charging, and so on. After the $7,500 federal tax credit, practically every regular buyer will be able to get into one of Mazda’s first electric vehicles for just $27,195. Now that other manufacturers have sold out of their tax-credit allotments, that, coupled with its style, is one of its most appealing characteristics. We’ll say this about whether it’s a true EV: The MX-30 is electric, but it’s not particularly good at it. If you don’t drive on the highway much and prefer short trips, the pricing may be appealing; for everyone else, pay a little more and purchase a Nissan Leaf or a Chevrolet Bolt, which both give over 200 miles of range for not much more money.

Not only is Mazda’s MX-30 a whole new vehicle, but it also represents the first time that the Japanese carmaker has experimented with a drivetrain that is comprised entirely of electric motors. An eight-way powered driver seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, electronic parking brakes, heated front seats, keyless ignition, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, simulated leather seats, and single-zone automatic temperature control are all standard inside the equipment. It also has an 8.8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth for hands-free calling and music streaming, a heads-up display, a digital gauge cluster, and an eight-speaker radio with AM/FM HD Radio, Mazda Connected telematics services, two USB ports, and speech recognition.
Fun to drive, but slow to accelerate
The MX-30 lives up to Mazda’s reputation for being a fun car to drive, with snappy handling and steering—also it’s the only vehicle with the MX prefix other than the Miata sports car. On bumpy pavement, the MX-30 offers a relaxing ride, and the cabin is silent and well-insulated. However, acceleration falls short of rivals such as the Chevrolet Bolt, Hyundai Kona Electric, and, most notably, the Tesla Model 3. The MX-30’s regenerative braking system has five settings, ranging from hardly discernible to a distinct one-pedal driving sensation at the highest setting; the steering wheel paddle shifters make it simple to switch between them. We wish the gear changer was as smooth, as we had trouble transitioning from park to reverse or drive and back.
