2023 BMW M3 Bringing Back the Colors from Past M3s
BMW’s M division has been around for 50 years, and a special edition of the M3 has been created to commemorate the occasion. 2023 BMW M3 Edition 50 Jahre BMW M is also a mouthful. However, the BMW version went over and above by bringing back the five available paint hues from each M3 generation. The E30 has Cinnabar Red, the E36 has Techno Violet, the E46 has Deep Interlagos Blue, the E92’s Lime Rock Park Edition has Fire Orange III, and the F80 M3 CS has Limerock Gray. The M3 is BMW’s most recognizable driver’s car, and the latest model demonstrates that the manufacturer hasn’t forgotten what made earlier M models instant classics. The current M3 comes standard with a rear-drive sedan with 473 horsepower and just a six-speed manual transmission. You’ll have to settle for an eight-speed automatic if you choose the 503-hp M3 Competition. The M3 Comp comes with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and its track-tuned chassis is stiff-riding to the point of resembling a race vehicle. The rear-drive Competition model’s 60-mph time of 3.5 seconds in our tests was 0.4 seconds faster than our long-term basic car. The base model can change into a surprisingly pleasant cruiser if you’re patient enough to master its Rubik’s Cube of drive modes. Rivals like the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing do a better job of connecting the car to the driver, but the M3 is still a thrillingly tactile experience.

The M3 sedan is powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine. The standard variant produces 473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels. Only a six-speed manual transmission is available. The M3 Competition’s engine produces 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, but it’s only available with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The M3 BMW car comes standard with rear-wheel drive, but an all-wheel-drive system with a rear-drive mode is also available. Adaptive dampers and adjustable brake pedal feel are included on every M3. The sedan can also be equipped with even more powerful carbon-ceramic brakes with gold-painted calipers.
The ordinary M3 and the Competition edition BMW m3 2023 both impressed us with their ability to pull off wild drifts, which were aided by the optional M Drift Analyzer (part of the M Drive professional package). We were particularly enamored with the manual gearbox’s smooth changes and the engine’s tenacious acceleration. The M3 does not, however, absorb the driver quite as much as the noisy Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.
The M3 sedan from 2022 is rated at 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the interstate. With all-wheel drive, the highway speed is reduced to 22 mph. Its real-world highway fuel economy was impressive, outperforming the EPA estimate by 32 miles per gallon on our highway test loop, which is part of our exhaustive testing.

The M3’s infotainment system is controlled mostly by a rotary knob and buttons on the center console, but it also has a 12.3-inch touchscreen. There are many charging ports on the system, as well as a variety of standard and extra features. Car BMW has finally integrated Android Auto and no longer requires a premium subscription for Apple CarPlay. Both come standard, as does a Harman/Kardon sound system and a one-year SiriusXM satellite radio subscription. Gesture controllers, a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot, and a wireless charging pad may all be added to the system.
Each M3 Edition 50 Jahre BMW M will have a plaque inscribed with the number of automobiles in the series of 500 that will be sold in the United States. The door sills have a badge with “Edition 50 Jahre BMW M” and red and blue stripes, as expected. We wish BMW had provided photographs of all five BMW colors, but we’ve only seen Deep Interlagos Blue and Techno Violet so yet.
