2023 Honda HR-V vs 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross: Crossover Civic and Corolla

Using the Corolla hatchback as its mechanical starting point, no less, Toyota’s recently unveiled Corolla Cross has pushed the long-running Corolla moniker into the compact SUV category. In order to compete with Toyota in the same subcompact crossover market, Honda recently updated its HR-V and switched from using the newest Civic’s bones to those of the Fit hatchback, which is no longer produced. In other words, the Toyota Corolla Cross and Honda Civic HR-V are essentially SUV variants of two of the most well-liked small cars in America, the Toyota Corolla, and the Honda Civic. Of course, we should compare the two.

The Civic and Corolla ties for these two SUVs are significant, particularly given the high brand awareness and reputation these cars enjoy but also given the relative youth of the HR-V and Corolla Cross nameplates. The Corolla Cross is brand-new this year, whereas the Honda HR-V has only been available since 2016. Both compete in the rapidly growing midsize SUV market; their Civic and Corolla brand recognition will undoubtedly help them stand out from sector leaders like the Kia Soul, Jeep Compass, Nissan Rogue Sport, and Chevy Trax.

Styling and Platforms

The HR-V advances significantly by utilizing the platform of the most recent Civic. The superb new Civic sedan and hatchback, which is supported by this component group, offers precise handling and a rigid body. Honda leaned on the old subcompact Fit to underpin the previous HR-V, but the Civic is one size larger, and that larger footprint is seen in the new HR-longer, V’s broader stance. A more sport-hatchback-like design with a more defined hood and a squarer body has replaced the Honda’s pudgy, dumpling-like look. The mouthy front, which some have compared to the Ford Escape’s “oh” face, is still up for debate, but the fastback rear with Civic hatchback-style taillights and shoulder line look sophisticated and attractive especially when contrasted to its Toyota counterpart.

Powertrain

The 1.8-liter, SOHC I-4 engine that powered the 2023 Honda HR-V is replaced with a 2.0-liter DOHC I-4 found in the base Civic. One more time, a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is expected in every vehicle. Each HR-V trim level offers all-wheel drive as an option in addition to front-wheel drive as standard. The HR-new V’s engine boosts output from 141 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque to 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet, statistics that are identical to those in Civics with 2.0-litre engines.

The 2.0-liter I-4 engine from the Corolla Cross, which was formerly an upgraded engine for Corolla sedans and standard on the hatchback, is another example of how Toyota draws on its existing Corolla engine lineup. This 2.0-liter engine will be standard on the updated Corolla sedan for 2023, replacing the base model’s 1.8-liter I-4. With 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, the Corolla Cross outperforms the HR-V in terms of power. However, this output is routed through a CVT to either the front or all four wheels. The new HR-V will need to be tested in order for us to determine how quick—or not—it is, but in our testing, the more potent Corolla Cross wasn’t especially speedy, hitting 60 mph in an unimpressive 9.3 seconds. The process took a last-generation 2019 HR-V, which was lighter and less powerful, 9.6 seconds.

You were correct if you assumed that the new HR-more V’s powerful engine and somewhat higher curb weight—which varies by model but is up to 200 pounds—would affect its fuel economy. Comparing the 2022 and 2023 HR-Vs, the 2023 HR-V has a general 2-mpg decrease. Despite being much behind the Civic’s EPA ratings and the Corolla Cross’s 30-32 mpg combined, the 2023 HR-V still gets respectable combined gas mileage at 27 to 28 mpg. A Corolla Cross Hybrid with allegedly 37 mpg combined will also be available in 2023 from Toyota, along with greater power than the standard Corolla Cross. We have heard that Honda may decide to follow Toyota’s example and introduce a hybrid HR-V.

Pricing

The starting price of the Toyota Corolla Cross is $23,660, which is significantly cheaper than the starting price of the Honda HR-V, which is $24,895. This disparity remains even between the highest trim levels, the Corolla Cross XLE (which costs $27,790) and the HR-V EX-L (which costs $28,695). For all-wheel drive (AWD), the basic price of a Toyota is increased by $1,300 across the board, whereas the equivalent increase for a Honda is $1,500.
