High MPG Used Cars

5 Best High MPG Used Cars for 2022

While many people staying home in 2020 allowed gas prices to plummet, 2021 hasn’t been as kind. Fuel prices have inched up higher over the year and don’t show any significant signs of letting up. And higher prices tend to make consumers rethink their vehicle choices and turn to more efficient cars. Brands such as BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, and Nissan (and Tesla, of course) are banking on all-electric vehicles, too. Until those arrive in real numbers, there are currently plenty of fuel-efficient gas-electric hybrid cars of all sizes and prices available. So, we rounded up the best high MPG used cars on the market for 2022. All of the cars(high mpg used cars) listed here do at least 35 mpg combined, while many exceed 50 mpg on the high end. Some even offer all-wheel-drive (AWD).

Hyundai Ioniq: Up to 60 mpg

While the radically styled 2022 model year Hyundai Ioniq 5 crossover is the talked-about member of Hyundai’s electrified family, the original Ioniq hybrid is still available and worth seeking out as an inexpensive way to get good fuel economy. The Ioniq’s 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor produce 139 total system horsepower, along with a six-speed automatic transmission. Standard features include an eight-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto connectivity, and respectable practicality with four doors and a hatchback layout.

Toyota Prius: Up to 56 mpg

The Toyota Prius kicked off the move to hybrids in the early 2000s and remains a highly efficient vehicle, even if Hyundai’s cars are nipping at its tires. While its looks remain controversial, what the Prius has in spades is practicality. Its hatchback body style, spacious cargo area, rear seat, and seats that fold relatively flat are part of the reason it’s so popular among Uber and Lyft drivers doing airport runs.

Hyundai Elantra: Up to 56 mpg

New last year, the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid shares the same striking styling as its gasoline-only counterparts. But for the first time, the Elantra gets a hybrid powertrain with a 139-horsepower system output. That’s not far off of what most Elantras have. But what’s significantly better is the up-to-56 mpg that the most efficient hybrid model can do. Even the gas-only Elantra gets up to 43 mpg.

Hyundai Sonata: Up to 54 mpg

Hyundai created a striking midsize sedan with the Sonata, and it remains so even two years after the current model was revealed sporting a coupe-like shape. Even more striking, however, is the Sonata Hybrid’s fuel economy at up to 54 mpg with a combined system output of 192 horsepower. That bests many smaller hybrids and makes for an estimated 686 miles on a tank in the base Blue trim level. It helps that the Sonata is a comfortable and spacious sedan. Four adults will be very comfortable, and even five in a pinch. Starting at just over $28,000, standard features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning and collision prevention, and an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Kia Niro: Up to 53 mpg

Those who value efficiency and practicality should check out the Kia Niro Hybrid. It uses the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid’s 139-horsepower powertrain and six-speed automatic but wrapped in a very different, SUV-shaped package. It is also one of the most practical, with up to 63.2 cubic feet of cargo space and reasonable space for four adults or some kids in the rear seat. Every Niro also gets an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Unlike some models on this list, the Niro misses out on standard advanced driver aids like forward-collision warnings and adaptive cruise control. But for just under $26,000, it offers a lot of cars (and efficiency) for the money.
