Anonymous Report: Toyota Crown SUV Headed to America

According to a claim from unknown insiders, Toyota plans to offer an SUV version of the Crown in Japan, China, and North America. According to the source, it will be a hybrid crossover that will not replace the long-running Crown sedan, which will continue to be offered but not likely in the U.S. The Toyota Crown Kluger is a high-end SUV based on the Toyota Highlander sold in China by the joint venture FAW-Toyota. It has left everyone wondering what exactly it could be? The most straightforward answer for what’s going on seems to be adapting the existing US-market Highlander and turning it into a Crown-badged model. But how would Toyota position it compared to the Highlander and Lexus models already on the market? Adapting the existing U.S.-market Highlander and transforming it into a Crown-badged model seems like the most straightforward explanation for what’s going on, but how would Toyota position it against the existing Highlander and the Lexus line? The Toyota Harrier/Venza is also available in a custom-styled variant from FAW, and it’s feasible that the hybrid Venza may be given the green light for a Crown makeover. The new report gives some validity to the concept that a Crown SUV is on the way, but it doesn’t provide much detail about what to expect or how Toyota may sell one. For decades, Toyota hasn’t offered a Crown sedan in the United States, let alone the current-generation luxury Crown sedan. Which raises a crucial question that is there any chance that this will change? Toyota recently submitted a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the Crown name for “automobiles and structural elements thereof.”

While the Crown name has traditionally been associated with a sedan and its coupe or wagon variants, if applicable, the name has recently been applied to other vehicles produced by the FAW Toyota joint venture in China as a sub-brand, such as the Chinese-market Highlander—the FAW Toyota Kluger—and a Crown Vellfire-based Alphard van.
