Audi America & Verizon Team Up to Offer 5G Connectivity in Cars
Audi is set to become the first global premium automaker to offer 5G connectivity technology on their lineup for the United States. To achieve this, Audi America has teamed up with Verizon. Verizon will bring the 5G Ultra-Wideband connectivity to the table, which offers improved navigation, OTA updates, and assist safety systems. The 2024 model year cars will be getting the 5G connectivity. This partnering with Verizon marks Verizon’s first agreement with the premium automaker to provide the 5G connectivity in Audi’s cars. This 5G upgrade would be first provided in the next generation of flagship and most selling models of Audi America. It may come as a surprise to many, but it is not new. Audi has also been the first automaker to offer in-vehicle Wi-Fi with 4G LTE connectivity in its car modal before, and now it would be the first to offer 5G connectivity. The car will be equipped with embedded technology, which will enable the vehicles to connect to Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network. It offers twofold benefits to the vehicle. First, it would not only have faster in-car Wi-Fi connectivity with quicker infotainment functioning. Secondly, it would make the advanced driving features and connected services more effective. It means better downloading and streaming speed along with assured quality. Audi America and Verizon collaborate on cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology, which enables vehicles to respond to infrastructure and other vehicles for low-latency warnings and messages. To keep the in-vehicle technology is updated and capable, it will receive regular software updates. Further, the automaker will provide Over the Air (OTA) firmware in all the 5G cars. The passengers will experience 3D/HD mapping and video, cloud-based user profiles, and mobile retail capability with the upgrade of infotainment and navigation systems. This C-V2X technology plays a crucial role in developing automated vehicles and safety technology. Often drivers have difficulty getting a better view of the vehicle surrounding even with the help of radar systems and vehicle cameras. The C-V2X technology will enable them to get a larger view of the vehicle’s surroundings. As far as the 5G expansion and deployment is concerned, Verizon has its 5G Ultra Wideband network spread across 1,700 cities of U.S. 7505 of this network has grown from 2020 to 2021 alone. Further, it is working on connecting more roadway users. The Audi’s flagship models and its higher selling models that will receive the 5G technology will come with some changes for 2022. It includes Audi Q5, Audi Q7, Audi Q8, Audi A6, the Audi A7, A8 lineup, and RS e-Tron GT. The Audi Q5 comes in standard and Sportback models. It is also available as a hybrid model. The prices of the Audi Q5 start at $43,300. It is available in three configurations. This car has a 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine mated with Quattro AWD and a 7-speed automatic transmission. The power output of this engine is 201 hp. The SQ5 model can go 0-60 MPH time of 4.7 seconds from its 349 hp turbocharged 3.0L V6 engine and costs $55,800. The 2022 Audi Q7 starts at $57,500 and goes up to $92,500, which is its SQ7 model. The base Q7 is equipped with a 248 hp 2.0L turbo engine and the 55 TFSI engine that offer power outputs of 329 hp. The 2022 Audi Q8 is equipped with the same engine as the Q7. The discrete features include the touches of luxury. The Q8 also comes in sportier RSQ8 and the SQ8 models. The Q8 is sold in the Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige configurations and has a fuel economy of 20 MPG combined. The 2022 Audi Q8 starts at an MSRP of $70,800. The 2022 Audi A7 sedan is equipped with a powerful 3.0L turbo V6 engine which produces 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. It comes with a spacious interior, and the price starts at $69,200. In comparison to the A7 sedan, The 2022 Audi A6 is cheaper. The A6 is laden with a spacious, high-quality interior. The price starts at $55,900. The A6 is also available in 45 Premium, 45 Premium Plus, 55 Premium, and 55 Premium Plus models. The 2022 Audi A8 and Audi S8 come with an upgraded interior. The A8’s turbocharged 3.0L engine offers a power output of 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The A8 starts at an MSRP of $86,500. Audi’s electric performance sedan, the 2022 Audi RS e-Tron GT sedan, is equipped with two electric motors with Audi’s Quattro setup. The motors output 637 hp with a 0-60 MPH time of 3.1 seconds, a top speed of 155 MPH, and a range of 232 miles.
