BMW Celebrates its 50th anniversary- 2024 BMW M4 CSL
New BMW CSL is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and the new BMW M4 CSL will feature a unique jubilee-edition BMW roundel logo on the hood design. Oh, and they cut 240 pounds of weight and added 40 horsepower (for a total of 543), resulting in a carbon-fiber land missile with a 6.7-pound-per-horsepower ratio. It won’t match the E46 CSL’s now-iconic aesthetics, but it’ll certainly leave one in the dust.Short for “Competition, Sport, Lightweight,” these high-performance BMWs follow in the footsteps of tuned-up, lighter-weight Bimmers dating back to the 3.0 CSL “batmobile” of the 1970s, which had a groundbreaking aerodynamic body package at the time.
A Great Racer
The new M4 CSL is powered by the same twin-turbo S58 inline-six as the Competition, but it has 40 more horsepower and weighs 240 pounds less. The result is a 3.6-second zero-to-60 time. It’ll also hit 124 mph (200 kph) in 11.5 seconds and wind up to 190 mph.
The M4 CSL has the same engine as the racing-only M4 GT3, but it doesn’t have a dry-sump oil system. Part of the reason for the increase in power is that M increased the maximum turbo boost pressure from 1.7 bar (or 1.3 bar in the manual) to 2.1 bar.
There will be no handbook, which is rather unsurprising. The M4 CSL will be equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission that can handle the 479 pound-feet of torque (which is unchanged from the M4 Competition) and shifts faster than Hans-Joachim Stuck.
To cope with the greater grip from the all-new Michelin Cup2R tires, which run to 275/35 ZR19 rubber upfront and 285/30 ZR20s at the back, major suspension adjustments were made, including reducing the ride height via new springs.
The new GT3-inspired M4 CSL isn’t playing around; BMW claims it just recorded the quickest lap time of any production BMW vehicle ever at the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit, clocking in at 7:20.2, nearly seven seconds faster than the 2016 BMW M4 GTS. Only 1,000 M4 cars will be sold worldwide, BMW M4 prices start at $140,895 including destination in the United States.
Highlights of CSL Design
The 2024 BMW m4 CSL will be available in conventional Alpine White or Black Sapphire metallic paint finishes, as well as a new Frozen Brooklyn Grey metallic (seen above). Leave it to the BMW car to commemorate a milestone with exhilarating paint colors like grey, white, and black. Thankfully, there are plenty of other details on the car BMW to make it stand out, including the historic BMW M 50th anniversary badging, which was initially used by BMW motorsports teams in 1973. The vehicle also gets retro yellow-tinted daytime running lights, as well as the first-time debut of new “light thread” technology in the taillight units, which forms BMW’s signature L-shaped light motif.
More about the Interior
The new BMW CSL’s whole center console is made of carbon fiber, yet it still has leather armrests and a charging tray for your phone. Carbon fiber inlays and an Alcantara steering wheel with a red indication at the 12 o’clock position complement the cabin’s carbon fiber finish. M carbon bucket seats with a set backrest angle, removable headrests for helmet-wearers, and black leather surfacing with red Alcantara inserts and contrast stitching are available exclusively from CSL. Power-adjustable, heated front seats are available for no extra charge and are still 21 pounds less than regular M4 Competition but warmers.
Features of Performance
The 2024 BMW model utilizes the same twin-turbo 3.0-liter I-6 engine found in the M4 Competition variant, with a few tweaks that add 40 horsepower. With 543 hp at 6,250 rpm and 479 lb-ft of torque up to 6,000 rpm, the 2024 BMW M4 CSL is currently the most powerful 4 Series. For higher-revving, the motor features arc-sprayed iron cylinder bores, 3D-printed cylinder heads, and a forged lightweight crankshaft. Boost pressure has been increased from 24.7 psi on the M4 Competition engine to 30.5 psi. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, with carbon fiber shift paddles positioned on the steering for manual gear selection.
For a lower center of gravity, the BMW truck altered the suspension system, with the CSL riding 0.3 inches lower than an M4 Competition. BMW claims that the 2023 M4 BMW will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and reach 120 mph in 10.5 seconds. To assist, the new BMW m4 has equipped a similar 10-stage traction control configuration to that found on the Competition, with the most amount of slip at setting 1 and the least amount of slip at setting 5, allowing owners to tune it to their desire (or ability to control the car).
