Massive Meetup in Japan: A Toast To 25 Years of the Iconic Honda Civic Type R
No one is not familiar with the popularity of the Civic hatchback line. The Honda Civic Type R history dates around 25 years ago when it was first introduced to the world. The introduction of the Civic surely set the bar high for the performance, fun, and that too at affordable rates. The EK9 Type R surely fits perfectly in the enthusiast market, being a truly aspirational car that aced the performance milestones. The “R” version is the 6th generation model of the Civic. Remember the ultra-rare NSX Type R model of the early 90s? The Honda Civic Type R shares the philosophy with it. It offers powerful yet lighter and increased handling. Various Comfort aspects were added to give the car owners high-revving euphoria. Right after the introduction, the Civic Type R became an instant legend. Further, this model was followed by EK9 with five more Civic Type R models and FK8. The long wait of getting the Civic Type R badge stateside is finally over as the next Civic Type R is expected to be seen on the road next year as the 10th generation Civic. The “Civic Type R Meeting 22 Spec” gathered on April 9th, in which all the Japan’s Type R owners came together to celebrate those 25 years of this popular modal’s production. The event was hosted at Mobility Resort Motegi (formerly Twin Ring Motegi). The 400 pre-registered participants also participated in the event along with the Type R owners, which was all fun. The day’s schedule went by as an optional track event followed by a parade lap and various discussions. The best highlight of the discussion was the presentation by the legendary Keiichi Tsuchiya. He has spent countless hours behind the wheel of various Type R models for many years. To start with the Civic Type R line, the first that all witnessed was the Championship White EK9. It sits on Regamaster Evo and has that EJ hatchback builds look, which every U.S. enthusiast strives for. Then there is this facelift version of the EK9 which features Spoon Sports’ classic two-tone livery. It has these dry matte wheels with signature blue calipers; the interior is all stripped and caged. The EP3 version of the Type R is based on the 7th generation Civic chassis. The sad truth about this model is that it could not gain the stardom as the model that was released before on even after it. In the states, Si gained high popularity, while in the overseas counterpart, only hatchback trim was offered. The credit for being the first and only Civic Type R sedan ever produced goes to FD2. The FD2 was the first and only Civic Type R sedan to ever be produced. Countless engines and transmissions with the 4-door’s original K20A have been obtained from Japan’s wrecking yards. The most number have been bolted into 1990s-era Civics and Integras. The FD2’s Mugen RR edition comes in this bright red row. The unique front bumpers and grille badging give it an easily recognizable unique identity. This edition features Mugen’s upgraded cams and valvetrain, dual exhaust, ram-air intake, 4-1 header, and suspension. You get the model-specific wheel package from the factory for this edition. To your surprise, only 300 cars were offered, and they got sold out in whopping 10 minutes. Then there was this Civic RR Advanced Concept which debuted by Mugen in 2009 with no intention of full production. It has got its inspirational roots in FD2. The model features custom aero touches carbon fiber replacement doors and panels. The various parts of this car were made of titanium parts with some intention to bring down the weight, and they were successful too. As per the numbers, it weighed 2,414. The 8th generation Civic-based FD2 was made with no intention of not being in full production as it was made available in Japan and other select regions. The 3-door FN2, with its quirky, stout profile, was offered in European and international markets. It was powered by a K20Z4 engine with and power output of 201hp, which was low in comparison to the FD2’s 225hp output. The Civic Type R was back in production in 2014 after the hiatus. And this time, for the first time, this 5-door layout car featured turbocharged motivation as it was powered by its K20C1 engine. Its availability was limited to the UK initially, and then around 750 models were exported to Japan.
