Here’s Everything You Should Know About Buying A CPO EV
We’re a few years into the renaissance of electric vehicles, leaving a variety of electric cars on the used market to choose from. The pandemic of 2020-21 has caused new car production to slow way down, resulting in the used market being more volatile than ever. One way to ensure that you are stepping into a well-maintained EV as opposed to someone’s mistreated, leftover appliance is by going with a certified pre-owned vehicle (CPO).
So if you are tired of sitting on the Tesla waiting list (or that of another EV company) and are thinking of buying one used, here’s what you should know.
Via Tesla In the case of a Tesla CPO EV, these are used cars that are sold by the carmaker once they have passed the brand’s CPO inspection and undergone refurbishing. However, this is not applicable to State or Federal incentives. Regardless of the brand, though, certified EVs tend to feature extended warranties and further benefits like roadside assistance programs. While CPO cars are inspected and covered by a guarantee, CPO vehicles won’t always be perfect, so it’s worth still taking a close look before making a purchase. You should be aware also that if you decide to purchase an electric from another brand’s dealership, the automaker will not have certified any vehicles in this case. A vehicle’s service history will help you verify that a car is indeed a CPO if you have any doubts.

Buying an EV CPO can be an exciting endeavor and a great way to secure good bang for your buck. With that said, it’s important to consider like battery expectancy, the cost, charging time, and battery range. Indeed, if an electric car battery fails, this can be a costly issue. So, going back to a point raised earlier, it’s important that you take the time to find the right EV CPO for you. By doing so, you’ll maximize your chances of successfully finding a good, reliable, and cost-effective electric car from the used market. The pros and cons of buying a used EV aren’t the only things you should be considering. If you’re shopping for a used electric vehicle, there’s a chance that means you’re trying to transition away from a traditional gas-powered vehicle. Keep in mind that not all EVs are created equally. While some EVs have a range of 300 miles, others can go only as far as 100 to 150 miles. Before buying a used EV, it’s important to determine then far you’ll need your vehicle to go between charges. Which brings us to our next point. If you’re planning to buy a used EV, you need to ask yourself how you plan on charging it. According to Autotrader, most EV owners can charge their vehicle overnight by using a traditional 120-volt outlet, but if you need your EV to charge a bit faster, you will need to invest in a more powerful charger. Of course, if you live in an EV-friendly city with public charging stations or work for an employer that has invested in charging stations for its employees, then charging up your electric vehicle might not be an issue.
